Filfl Restaurant
Filfl Restaurant offers a tantalizing taste of Eritrea and Ethiopia in the heart of Zurich. As an avid food explorer, I’ve always been on the hunt for unique culinary experiences, and Filfl did not disappoint.
The moment I stepped into Filfl, I was greeted with a warm “Herzlich Willkommen” and immediately felt the rich cultural ambiance. The restaurant promises an exploration of the of Eritrean and Ethiopian cuisine, and it truly delivers on that promise. The menu is a journey in itself, and the staff, ever so gracious, are always ready to guide you through it.
On one of my visits, I was drawn to the mixed platter, a delightful assortment of dishes served on a bed of Injera, a sourdough flatbread that’s a staple in Ethiopian cuisine. Sharing food from a communal plate, as is traditional, felt like an intimate bond of loyalty and friendship. The ethno food was a revelation, with each bite offering a burst of authentic flavors, all in a family-like ambiance.
Another evening, I decided to venture into the vegetarian realm. The vegetarian platter for two was a revelation. The portions were generous, and each dish was a symphony of flavors. The staff were incredibly informative, ensuring I was aware of any allergens and guiding me through the choices. The owner’s warmth and hospitality stood out, making me feel right at home.
One of the standout moments was when I tried their spicy starters. Bold, spicy, and incredibly moreish, they were a treat to the palate. The service throughout was outstanding, with the staff being attentive, friendly, and genuinely passionate about their offerings.
The decor of the restaurant added to the entire experience. Authentic, unpretentious, and reminiscent of East Africa, it set the mood for the culinary journey. And to top it all off, after a hearty meal, I was pleasantly surprised with a complimentary Eritrean shot. It was the perfect end to a delightful meal.
In conclusion, Filfl Restaurant is more than just a dining experience; it’s a cultural immersion. If you’re in Zurich and have a penchant for authentic African cuisine, Filfl is a must-visit. I’m already looking forward to my next culinary adventure there, maybe we’ll meet.
Filfl is located at Zentralstrasse 136, 8003 Zürich and you can get there with the 2 and 3 tram.
Meskerem Restaurant
Meskerem is a little further out from the downtown area I am usually out and about at Birmensdorferstrasse 364, 8055 Zürich.
The name ‘Meskerem’ resonates with the first month of the Ethiopian calendar, marking the end of the rainy season and the onset of the harvest period. It’s a time of celebration, joy, and gratitude, and this essence is beautifully encapsulated in the dishes served at Meskerem.
On my first visit, I was immediately drawn to the vegetarian plate, which, to my delight, was vegan and gluten-free! Each dish was a burst of fresh, authentic Ethiopian flavors. The injera, made from pure Teff flour, was a revelation. It’s rare to find food that’s both nutritious and satisfying, leaving you content without that typical heavy feeling. And the warm, friendly service only added to the experience.
I’ve been to Meskerem twice now, and I’m already planning my third visit. The owners exude genuine warmth, making you feel right at home. While it might not be bustling like eateries in more popular areas, this quiet charm is precisely what makes Meskerem unique.
For those unfamiliar with Ethiopian cuisine, the mixed platter is a must-try. A delightful combination of beef, egg & chicken, and lamb, it’s a treat for the senses. The owner personally guided me on how to mix the food correctly, enhancing the dining experience. And if you’re unsure about what to order, trust me, this mix is the way to go. The dishes are spicy, and the hands-on approach to eating adds to the authenticity.
One of the highlights of my visits was the honey wine, a traditional drink that’s both unique and refreshing. The platter for two is an absolute delight, and I can’t recommend it enough.
On a recent visit with friends, we began our evening with a glass of white wine, setting the tone for the culinary journey ahead. We opted for a vegetarian appetizer followed by the ‘meskerem for four’. The waiter, with his in-depth knowledge, walked us through each dish, making the experience even more memorable. My vegetarian friend was pleasantly surprised with a separate plate, a kind gesture that wasn’t charged. We ended our meal with the typical Ethiopian tea, a perfect conclusion to a delightful evening.
While the interiors might seem simple, it’s the food and service that truly stand out. Meskerem offers a spacious setting, ideal for both groups and couples. And on a pleasant day, the outdoor seating is a bonus.
In conclusion, Meskerem is not just a restaurant; it’s an experience. Whether you’re a fan of Ethiopian cuisine or a curious food explorer, this place promises a journey you won’t forget. I can’t wait for my next visit!
Mesob Restaurant
Mesob is a trendy Ethiopian restaurant near Goldbrunnenplatz.
The name ‘Mesob’ itself is deeply rooted in Ethiopian and Eritrean culture, referring to the traditional table made from woven straw. Shaped like an hourglass, it’s designed for communal dining, with people sitting around it, sharing meals in the age-old tradition. The Mesob comes with a lid, which is lifted when it’s time to feast, revealing plates of delectable dishes placed within.
On my first visit, I was immediately drawn to the vegi platter. Simple yet bursting with flavors, it was a testament to the authenticity of Ethiopian cuisine. The portions were generous, leaving me satiated and eager for my next visit. The staff, with their genuine warmth and friendliness, only added to the delightful experience.
What truly stood out for me was the colorful presentation of the dishes. The vibrant hues of the stews and curries were a feast for the eyes. And the taste? Simply divine. I remember the stew in the center of the plate; its rich flavors were so overwhelming that I was moved to the brink of tears. Yes, I might be exaggerating a tad, but it was genuinely that good. To complement the meal, I tried the peppermint tea, which was refreshingly aromatic and the perfect palate cleanser.
Dining at Mesob is a hands-on experience, quite literally. Embracing the traditional Ethiopian way of eating, I delved in using my hands, making the meal even more intimate and enjoyable. For those new to this style, the servers are always ready to guide you, ensuring you get the most out of your meal.
I’ve frequented Mesob multiple times now, and each visit has been a delightful journey. The Shiro, a dish I’ve come to adore, is consistently outstanding, and the meat dishes, infused with aromatic spices, are a carnivore’s dream. The service is impeccable. It’s heartwarming how they remember your name after just one reservation, making each visit feel like coming home.
In conclusion, Mesob isn’t just a restaurant; it’s an experience, a journey into the rich culinary traditions of Ethiopia and Eritrea. Whether you’re a seasoned aficionado of Ethiopian cuisine or a curious food lover, Mesob promises a dining adventure you won’t forget. I’m already looking forward to my next culinary escapade here!
