Inside of a busy persian restaurant

The best Persian Restaurants in Zurich

Payam and Omid, a hidden persian Gem

Tucked away at Am Wasser 135 along the Limmat in Zurich, Payam and Omid is a Persian culinary delight that remains one of Zurich’s best-kept secrets. With its bright yellow facade adorned with a captivating Persian mural painting and a welcoming terrace, the exterior itself is a prelude to the warmth and authenticity that awaits inside; you’ll see it from far away advertising “Persische Spezialitäten,” or Persian specialties in English. This is my favorite Persian restaurant in Zurich.

When you step in, it feels less like entering a restaurant and more like being invited into someone’s cherished home. The ambiance resonates with the rich traditions of Persian culture, and the owner is a wonderful host. He ensures every guest knows that he knows they are here. It’s a feeling that’s hard to explain and something you must experience.

The food is fantastic. From traditional Persian delicacies that the owner will recommend to tailored vegetarian menus crafted on what you want to eat (he’ll ask you to tell, and they see what they can do). Every dish is a testament to the restaurant’s commitment to quality and flavor. But beyond the exquisite cuisine, the intangibles – the ambiance, the warmth, and the genuine camaraderie – make dining at Payam and Omid a genuinely unforgettable experience.

If you’re seeking good Persian food in Zurich, this is it. It’s nothing fancy, it isn’t pricey (maybe 20-30+ per person), but here, the food is as heartwarming as the atmosphere, and the hosts, Payam and Omid, should be at the top of your list.

Höngger Oriental Persian Restaurant

Höngger Oriental is probably Zurich’s most famous Persian restaurant, celebrated for its authentic and delectable offerings.

The menu combines traditional dishes such as the aromatic Ghormeh Sabzi, an Iranian herbal stew with meat, and the Baghali Polo ba Mahiche, a delightful concoction of beans, rice, dill, and tender lamb shank. Not to forget their famous “fire barbecue” kebabs, where dishes like the Tschelo Kubideh and Jujeh Kabab promise a fusion of rich flavors with Safran rice and grilled tomatoes.

Vegetarian or meat, their Mezze is a genuine Persian experience. I really enjoy their Kashke Badegan, an eggplant-type, aubergine-mint-garlic dip. They also have a few popular non-Persian Middle Eastern dishes they make well.

Hoengger Oriental is also a great place to spend time with friends. The ambiance is cozy and homey, which is just welcoming. It’s a little smaller, but they make it work.

The staff and especially the owner are wonderful. Whether meeting friends for lunch or planning a dinner, the food is always fresh, promptly served, and delicious. For larger groups, it’s advisable to book in advance. Dive into the essence of Persian hospitality and culinary brilliance in Zurich.

As you can probably tell from the name, Höngger Oriental is not in the downtown, which may be its only downside. Well worth a trip, though!
